STRATUM I
Above the smog ceiling. Sunlight is a paid utility here.
Corporate spires terminate in private sky-docks. Movement is by lift-craft — licensed, logged, and priced at eleven months of a Midstack wage. Nobody in Uptown has touched a ladder in forty years.
STRATUM II
The old city, load-bearing and forgotten.
Pre-collapse Manhattan, now a structural foundation with people still living in it. Scaffold markets, gray clinics, unlicensed body-shops. This is where the filament was designed — and where it was stolen back.
STRATUM III
Flooded transit. Dark, tidal, off the grid.
The drowned subway. No corporate sensors, no census, no light except what people wire themselves. Vellum stopped mapping it in 2071. That is exactly why ARC lives here.

Holds 94% of the licensed augmentation market and the patent on every neural bus that talks to it. Vellum does not sell bodies — it leases capability, on a subscription that terminates on missed payment. A lapsed limb is a legal repossession.
Nanofilament gland · prototype, unlicensed
A synthetic gland seeded along the forearm fascia. Extrudes a monofilament with a tensile strength of 4.1 GPa at 40 microns, cured by contact with atmospheric moisture. Designed as industrial rigging for Uptown construction. Never approved for a human host.
Ex-Vellum bio-engineer · designation withheld
Lead on the spinneret program until the ethics filing was buried. Walked out with the only working prototype in her own arm — the fastest way to get it past the gate scanners was to make it part of the body. Vellum has been billing her for it monthly ever since.
